Daatlers · Data Journey

Where are you on your
data journey?

There are a few familiar stages every team goes through when working with data. It often starts with spreadsheets, Excel or Google Sheets, then comes a proper visualisation layer, then automating the backend, and eventually AI that surfaces answers without being asked. Most organisations sit somewhere in the middle. Four stages. Which one feels like yours?

01. Excel rules

Data wants out.

Data lives in spreadsheets. Pivots, overviews, the occasional nice chart. For a lot of things it works fine and always will. This is where the first questions start: could we see this better somehow?

"Hey, could we get a better view of this somehow?"

What we love

  • Still better than nothing
  • Incredibly flexible
  • No extra licence costs

What we struggle with

  • Everyone has their own version of the truth
  • Visualising data in Excel has its limits
  • Sharing, updating, adding more sources. Each hurts in its own way.

02. Power BI enters

Great start, lots of care though.

We start using more advanced tools. Data gets a home, KPIs get tracked, reports actually help. But everything still needs a lot of tending.

This is the right moment to go at it properly.

What we love

  • Visualisation is getting better
  • Sharing is quite a bit easier
  • First seeds of something called data governance

What we struggle with

  • Still a lot of manual work
  • Reports overcrowded, no clear focus
  • Licence costs start adding up
  • Updating data still requires manual effort

What we love

  • Insight actually drives business decisions
  • A proper backend finally removes the manual work
  • More and more sources joined in one place

What we struggle with

  • A lot of effort, costs slowly rising (storage, compute, licences)
  • Governance is now serious: access, ownership, stewardship
  • Still easy to produce piles of reports that bring no real value

03. Done properly

Data finally works itself.

Scale and data volume forced us to level up. First data warehouses, first fully automated reports. Less is more on a report. The right KPI, clear focus. Governance stops being a buzzword and becomes a real need.

04. Chat with data

AI finds insights for you.

This is where the journey is heading. Once your data is in one place, well governed and well described, AI can step in and start working for you.

We see a future where every part of the organisation has instant access to the data it needs, where AI helps people ask the right questions and surface answers before problems even arise. Most companies aren’t there yet, but everything you build in the earlier stages is what makes this possible.
